Every four years the world awaits the arrival of its biggest sports competition – the Summer Olympics. And it has arrived. Today marks the opening of Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For the first time in Olympic history, the games take place on South American soil.
Citius, Altius, Fortius – "faster, higher, stronger"
Brazil, the continent's largest country, is no stranger to hosting massive sports events. Two years ago it hosted the 2014 World Cup. However, the two events differ vastly. The World Cup consists of only one sport – soccer, whereas this Olympic Games consists of 42 sports. They include swimming, cycling, basketball and tennis to name a few. This time around, rugby sevens and golf join the list of Olympic sports.
Competitors from around the world
Around 10,500 athletes, hailing from 206 different countries, will compete in the games. As the world's finest athletes, they come to Rio to win medals and break records. But the Olympics are also a place where unbelievable moments happen and international friendships are born. |
